Mary Simuyu originally trained as a teacher

but now works for the Kakamega County Water and Sanitation Company as the Customer Service Manager. She joined the programme out of her desire to improve her company's service delivery, especially to poorer neighbourhoods. Her study seeks to empower consumers in low income areas of Mumias by creating awareness about the company's accountability tools and encouraging their usage.

Mary says:

'I believe that an empowered community is in a better position to hold the company accountable. Greater accountability will improve service delivery and enhance our relationship with consumers. This will make them happy to pay for the services we render.'
